Growing up, there were 2 movies that I seem to play on repeat, One of these was Labyrinth, and to this day I still love it.
There is a LOT of subtext and metaphors hidden and overt within the movie, I will only hit the major plot, because that is a huge rabbit hole {like the theory that based on ONE line of dialogue, Only girls named Sarah go on that journey}
To be simple, it is a coming of age film about a girl that escapes into a fantasy book, and shrugs responsibility to live in that fantasy, when confronted with the reality of seeing behind that curtain of what seems good on the surface that is a major wake up call.
All within the movie, she is presented with others that seem to want to help her, but she decides to ‘go her own way’ and every decision she makes opposite of that help causes more headaches.
In the background, there is the major authority figure, that authority figure only wants one thing, for Sarah to submit to him, he controls her and manipulates the world to try and break her will, but in the end she comes to realize, the King has no power over her, she is fully capable of handling situation by herself with aid of her friends.
“Through dangers untold. And hardships unnumbered. I have fought my way here to the castle; beyond the goblin city, to take back the child that you have stolen. My will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom as great, you have no power over me.”
